The creation of the Metaphor Map and the analysis of its underlying data was a massive job, involving thousands of hours of painstaking research. This in turn was built upon the 45 years of lexicographical study involved in the production of the Historical Thesaurus. The figures below give a sense of the scale of the Mapping Metaphor project:
- Over 4 million word senses manually analysed by our team
- Over 10,000 metaphorical links identified between semantic categories
- Many tens of thousands of individual metaphors identified
- 415 semantic categories, based on the Historical Thesaurus of English hierarchy of meaning
- 399 semantic categories in Old English
- Coverage of the English language over the past 1300 years, from Old English to the present day
- The Metaphor Map data is based on the 793,742 word forms and 225,131 semantic categories of the Historical Thesaurus of English
