Merry Christmas!

Posted by Ellen Bramwell on the 17th of December 2013

As it is only a week or so to go until Christmas, I thought it would be nice to use the occasion to introduce the new Historical Thesaurus of English (HTE) website. The HTE was published in printed form as the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary in 2009 and Mapping Metaphor is using the database behind this project to build our metaphor map of the English language over time.

There are eighteen words listed under Christmas (noun), ranging from Old English to the present day (with the last new entry Christmas-time appearing in 1837), from symbelcennes to Yule (geol in Old English) to Xmas. Take a look for yourself by following this link: Christmas
